Well I just couldn’t handle it anymore, I finally started my vinyl collection. I had the gall to write a post on my other blog about vinyl coming back as the new main physical format for music without even having a vinyl collection of my own. So with the intention of full integrity, I started mine.
After spending two hours at the record store flipping through every single record in that store, I decided upon Radiohead’s Hail To The Thief. Because obviously, if I am going to put any weight on my FIRST record in my collection - the record when I am asked fifty years from now which was the first in this gargantuan collection was my first purchase - what do I want to tell them? Here is what I want to tell them… Radiohead’s Hail To The Thief.
There is something beautiful about paying for music again. Not only paying for music, but purchasing it in a format that takes some work to get to play, comparatively. It will force you to appreciate it a little more. You worked for the money you paid to come home and move some mechanical stuff around to play and enjoy. Something about that keeps you holding on every note.
I don’t have a turntable just yet, so I went over to my friend Nard’s house to listen through my new album. I heard things in Hail To The Thief that I have never heard before and believe me, I have listened to that record plenty of times. I don’t think it is because of the sound quality of vinyl, I think it’s because I paid $27 for this record that I have heard a thousand times.
Well if I have convinced you to start your record collection please, please comment back with your first choice. And if you already have a collection please still, what was your first choice?
